JYJohn YacoubFull-stack developer

I build data-driven web applications.

Five years of React, Next.js and Node, mostly on e-commerce platforms and the internal tools that keep them running. Based in Houston, and open to work.

About

The short version

I'm a full-stack developer in Houston. Most of the work is frontend: React, Next.js and TypeScript, plus the Node services sitting behind them.

Five years and change, mostly on e-commerce platforms and the internal tools nobody demos. I've moved a jQuery codebase onto React, built dashboards, wired in third-party tracking, and spent a lot of hours on why a page takes four seconds to load.

I work closely with backend developers and with whoever asked for the feature in the first place. That second part matters more than it sounds.

Leading
Led a cross-functional team of two.
Debugging
Tracked down performance problems that were costing load time and redundant API calls.

Developer solutions

  • Built and maintained more than ten custom features across e-commerce platforms.
  • Moved a legacy jQuery codebase onto React. Performance improved and maintenance time dropped by about 60%.
  • Built dashboards twice over: once in vanilla JS and CSS, later in React with Tailwind and SCSS.
  • Added third-party libraries and tracking across client sites.
  • Worked with the backend developers to connect the UI to server-side functionality.
  • Optimized pages for load speed.
  • Reviewed code and built reusable components on a modular structure.

Avon Studio Transportation

Web developer

  • Maintained the client-facing retail site and the internal CMS, both React and Node.
  • Built and kept up the internal tools the office ran on.
  • Followed what was changing in the tooling and brought over the parts that were worth it.

Lynwood City Pathways

Web developer

  • Wrote the logic that matched resources to businesses based on their survey answers, and connected it to the front end.
  • Built the survey-management components against APIs for live responses and authentication.
  • Built a business details page for managing user information.
  • Wrote client-side validation for registration and login against the backend services.
  • Integrated the AWS SDK for file uploads.
  • Two-week sprints, with code review.
Projects

Four things I built, and what each one had to solve

Hardware control, live vehicle telemetry, a booking loop and a scraping toolkit. Only the third one is public.

Private

Interactive switcher interface

A web interface that drives real hardware. Device inputs and outputs, switched live or on a schedule.

  • Manages the inputs and outputs of connected devices in real time from the browser.
  • Cron scheduling sets device power state across defined time slots. You can watch job status and create new ones from the UI.
  • Talks to an ESP8266 microcontroller over low-level control signals, which is what makes the relay switching stay in sync.
  • Next.js for client-side routing, Tailwind for an interface that still works on a phone in the field.

Autonomous vehicle interface

A React control surface for an autonomous vehicle: live location, route visualization, sensor feedback.

  • Responsive React UI, built to work on a laptop and on a tablet in the vehicle.
  • Google Maps API for routes, paths and live location tracking.
  • ROS and Socket.IO stream vehicle status and sensor feedback into the interface.
  • Debugged hardware and software issues across vehicle components with the engineering team.

Appointment booking for small businesses

A small full-stack booking app for barbershops, salons and freelancers. The appointment loop and nothing else.

  • React front end on Semantic UI for the booking screens.
  • Express and MongoDB behind it, handling bookings, availability and user data.
  • Email confirmation on booking, and time-limited booking logic so two people cannot take the same slot.
  • Scoped for small businesses rather than enterprise scheduling, which kept it small.

Utilities express server

A modular developer-tools server for content automation: scraping, batching and extraction behind a set of endpoints.

  • Scraping utilities on Puppeteer that handle several page templates and site structures.
  • An image scraper that takes batch requests and saves the assets for offline use.
  • A styling scraper that pulls CSS off a target site and formats it for reuse.
  • Endpoints take flexible input, with a UI over the top.
